‘1948’ is an archived video from original 16mm film ‘Cheju-do Mayday‘ by the US military in 1948, focuses on the non-verbal expression in the manipulated narrative. The original film, taken with the intention of the indifferent observer, was the only video record showing the situation at the beginning of the Jeju 4.3 upspring and was used as the data to justify supression operations on Jeju Island. The low-resolution screen displays close-ups of gestures of rushing policemen, residents who lost their homes, children caught by the police, and an old man who build a coffin. It is overlapped with a dull frictional sound recorded with contact microphones in the water to make fabricated historical facts even more abstract.

1948년 미군에 의해 촬영된 16mm 영화 ‘제주도의 메이데이Cheju-do Mayday’를 편집한 본 아카이브 영상은 조작된 내러티브 속 비언어적 표현을 중점적으로 보여준다. 무심한 관찰자의 시선으로 촬영한 필름은 제주 4.3 사건 초기의 상황을 나타내는 유일한 영상기록이자, 이후 제주도에서 벌어지게 될 토벌작전을 정당화하기 위한 자료로 활용되었다. 영화에 등장하는 돌격하는 경찰들과 집을 잃은 주민들, 경찰에 잡힌 어린이와 관을 짜는 노인의 손짓과 몸짓을 클로즈업하여 해상도를 낮춘 화면과 컨택트 마이크를 이용해 물속에서 녹음한 둔탁한 마찰음은 조작된 역사적 사실을 추상화시키는 장치로 쓰인다.
