‘island of is and yous’ began with the question "Where does the soul go after a human being passes away?" ‘i’ roam neither this world nor the afterlife, but the purgatory where a soul disembodied by death is bound to stay before receiving God's judgment, chasing the footprints of ‘you’, who once existed in this world but have now returned to the island. ‘you’ existed as a dwarf, a bird, a stone, wind, a fish, a mother and smell. ‘i’ follow after ‘you’ who enter the process of death, explore minute fragments of space and time, then discover, collect and taxidermize your twisted traces. Those collected sounds circulate in a loop, and sometimes overlap, collide, and resonate. This project is the record of an ‘island’ located somewhere between the phases of birth, death and rebirth.

Iceland, a motif of the ‘island’ as heterotopia and purgatory in this project, is a narrative island with rich folktales handed down over time due to its unique natural environment and geological features. The island is filled with mythological imaginations from origins of the world to the emergence of mankind, and simultaneously plays its role as a warning spot of crisis of climate change facing humanity today. The island space's basic duality demands viewers constant judgment between isolation and connection, life and death, and leaving and staying. As viewers enter ‘the island’, they sense the sounds moving from right to the left and from the front to the rear, while the visibility is deliberately restricted. The narration whispers over the melting glacier's sound, and the stories lead viewers to enter their own ‘middle worlds’. This project consists of a 5-channel ambient sound installation using sound resources collected from southern Iceland and poetry narrations, and a booklet containing six poems and six black and white photographs.


‘나들과 너들의 섬'은 사람이 죽고 난 뒤 남겨진 영혼은 어디로 가는가에 대한 의문으로부터 시작되었다. ‘나’는 죽음으로 인해 육신과 분리된 영혼이 신의 심판을 받기 전 머무른다는 이승도 저승도 아닌 중간 세계를 유람하며, 한때는 이승에 존재했으나 지금은 섬으로 돌아간 ‘너’의 발자취를 쫓는다. ‘너’는 난쟁이였다가 새였다가 돌이었다가 바람이었다가 물고기였다가 엄마였다가 냄새였다. ‘나’는 죽음의 과정에 들어간 ‘너’의 뒤를 따라 잘게 부서진 시공간을 탐험하며, 뒤엉킨 ‘너’의 흔적을 발굴하고 채집하여 박제한다. 채집된 소리는 원을 그리며 순환하고, 때때로 중첩되었다 충돌하고 울려퍼진다. 이는 탄생과 죽음, 그리고 다시 태어남의 과정 그 어딘가에 위치한 어떤 ‘섬’에 관한 기록이다.

헤테로토피아이자 중간지대로 표현되는 ‘섬’의 모티브가 된 아이슬란드는 고유의 자연환경과 지질학적 특성 덕분에 풍부한 구전설화가 전승된 이야기의 섬이다. 세계의 기원부터 인류의 출현에 얽힌 신화적 상상력이 가득한 이 섬은 동시에 기후변화로 대변되는 지구종말을 경고하는 장소의 역할을 한다. 섬이라는 공간이 지닌 원초적 이중성은 관객으로 하여금 고립과 연결, 삶과 죽음, 그리고 떠남과 머무름에 대한 끊임없는 판단을 요구한다. ‘섬’으로 상징되는 전시장에 들어선 관객은 시각을 차단당한 상태에서 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로, 앞에서 뒤로 이동하는 사운드를 감지한다. 빙하가 녹는 소리 너머로 속삭이듯 나레이션이 흘러나오고, 이야기는 관객들을 각자의 ‘중간지대’로 이끌어 준다. 이 프로젝트는 한 달에 걸쳐 아이슬란드 남부에서 채집한 소리와 나레이션을 이용한 5채널 사운드 설치, 그리고 여섯 편의 시와 여섯 장의 흑백사진을 담은 책자로 구성되었다.
