‘A conversation with Jan Winter’ is a project started by imagining a fictional character named Jan Winter, a cemetery gardener in Berlin. I scour cemeteries in Berlin and finally find Jan, the night-gardener, and listen to his story. This guy, who manages the cemetery trees during the night, tells us secrets of the dark cemetery. The trees in the cemetery, who absorb new life from souls of dead human bodies, are like hidden doors connecting life and death. As you exist in this world, you are also existing on the other side of the tree. If you're lucky enough, you may have a chance to find a pathway that opens when the sun is at the top of a head and when the wind blows from north. Once you find it, you might be able to transcend this life and beyond.
‘얀 빈터와의 대화’는 베를린의 묘지 정원사 얀 빈터라는 가상의 인물을 상상하면서 시작한 프로젝트이다. 나는 베를린의 묘지를 샅샅이 뒤져 밤의 정원사인 얀을 찾아내어 그의 이야기를 듣는다. 묘지의 나무들을 관리하는 이 인물은 어둠이 내린 묘지에서 일어나는 비밀스런 일을 조심스레 우리에게 들려준다. 죽은 사람의 영혼으로부터 새로운 생명을 얻는 묘지의 나무들은 삶과 죽음을 잇는 숨겨진 문과도 같다. 이승의 당신이 살아 숨쉬는 것처럼 나무 저편에도 당신은 존재한다. 만약에 당신이 운이 좋다면, 북풍이 불어오는 어느 겨울날 해가 머리 꼭대기에 있을 때 열린다는 나무의 통로를 발견하고, 시간을 초월하여 이승과 저승을 넘나드는 능력을 가지게 될지도 모를 일이다.
